Carrier vs essential oils: dilution is not optional trivia

Carrier oils moisturize. Essential oils are aromatic concentrates. They are not twins.

5 min read · Updated October 30, 2026

01Carrier oils

Pressed or refined fatty oils that spread easily and dilute other ingredients.

02Essential oils

Steam-distilled or expressed aromatic concentrates. A little goes a long way; more is not kinder.

03Dilution vocabulary

Percent dilutions describe drops of essential oil in a carrier. Follow the product you bought, not a social post.

04Photosensitivity

Some citrus oils can make skin more sun-sensitive. Check warnings on the bottle.
