Reading botanical labels: Latin names, extracts and leaf water

A leaf on the bottle is marketing. The INCI list is the inventory.

01Why Latin names appear

International cosmetic naming often uses Latin plant names so the same ingredient is recognizable across languages.

02Extract vs oil vs water

An oil is lipid-rich; a floral water (hydrosol) is watery; an extract can be many solvents. Directions differ.

03Percentage clues

Ingredients are generally listed most to least. A botanical named near the end is present in a small amount.
